Top Five Family-Friendly Coffee Tables

Too many times as a new mom, I’ve run into the crossroads between making sure my space is functional for my toddler’s needs, and not crossing over into the territory where I lose my own sense of design in my home. And if I have to prioritize having a pristine space versus modifying my approach to accommodate my peanut-butter-pawed toddler, well I’m always going to choose the latter.

The good news is that it’s not impossible to strike a balance between the two! Especially on a furniture item that most people have in their space, but one that maybe doesn’t get a ton of recognition. The COFFEE TABLE! To make things straightforward for mom’s looking to spruce up their space in a kid-friendly way, I’ve rounded up my top five favorite coffee tables that vary in price point, but serve up an equal side of practicality and style.

And what factors might contribute to making a coffee table family-friendly for the tiny people in your home who don’t have full motor control yet? Soft edges (anyone else panic with sharp ass corners everywhere??), durable fabric, sturdy base, and last but not least… we want it to look STUNNING!

Coffee Table 1: West Elm

Heather Taylor Home Scarlett Bench

$599

We lurrvveee a coffee table with a pattern. Why? Because it hides stains, it adds a point of interest in your space, and just overall why wouldn’t we love a coffee table with a pattern??

Coffee Table 2: Interior Define

Jasper Ottoman

$845

I am overwhelmed with the sheer number of options and configurations for this coffee table/ottoman. You want pink fabric with metal legs? Cool. You want green boucle with wood legs? Cool. You want a hot dog pattern with hot dog legs? Cool… but they don’t have this option. As a side note, you can order swatches of fabric for free to test out what you might like best.

Coffee Table 3: Burke Decor

Augustine Large Ottoman

$799

I have this ottoman, and I love this ottoman. My husband, however, feels differently. With synthetic velvet upholstery, you’re going to run into stains showing a bit more readily. For me, it’s a non-issue. I don’t mind pieces feeling used and worn in. For my OCD husband, it’s a problem, so we just don’t talk about it.

Coffee Table 4: Hearth & Hand

Boucle Upholstered Square Cocktail Table

$330

What do we want? An affordable piece of furniture! When do we want it? Whenever it’s on sale again! All jokes aside, this piece comes at a low price point and brings a punch of color in the always-timeless olive green. As an added bonus, boucle is great at resisting water… which means it will be easier to clean up the inevitable spills.

Coffee Table 5: West Elm

Leo Motion Leather Coffee Table

$479

I must admit that my design hand leans quite feminine, but there’s nothing I love more than adding some masculine tones in a room by incorporating pieces of leather! When cared for correctly, it can hide stains, take a beating (from a jumping toddler), and can do a great job at warming up a space.

HOT TIP: if you’re like me and my husband, you might enjoy a dinner or two on the couch. And if you’re like me or my husband, you need a place to set down your drink or plate, and let me tell you… a fabric coffee table ain’t it!! If you go the fabric coffee table route, make sure you arm yourself with coffee table trays. For our house, we have a stagnant tray that is aesthetically pleasing, and holds our candles and remotes 90% of the time. Once our nugget is in bed, we’ll bring out the dusty $3 trays to eat on the couch like the classy individuals we are.
